What to check before you book
Membership you can verify
HETAS, NACS, the Guild or APICS. Check the sweep appears on that body's own search, not just a logo on a van.
Public liability insurance
NACS and the Guild both make it a condition of membership. Ask to see it if you are unsure.
Proper training
Look for formal training and ongoing refreshers. NACS trains members on its own course; the Guild requires refresher training.
A certificate of sweeping
You should get one every time. Insurers may ask for it, and solicitors often do when you sell.
Sweep before the season
HETAS advises sweeping before the heating season, so book before you light the first fire of the winter.

HETAS advises at least twice a year if you burn wood or bituminous house coal, and at least once a year for smokeless fuel, ideally before the heating season starts.
How much does a chimney sweep cost?
HETAS puts most sweeps at £60 to £85, averaging about £72, as of May 2026. Removing a bird's nest typically adds £100 to £200, and power sweeping or a CCTV survey £50 to £100 each.
Do I need a chimney sweep certificate?
It is your record that the flue was swept. Home insurers may ask for one after a chimney fire, and solicitors often request it when a house is sold, so keep each one.
How do I know a sweep is really a member?
Search for them on the body's own website. The Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps, for example, says a sweep who is not on its search is not a member.
Why sweep a chimney at all?
Soot and debris build up in the flue and can catch fire. HETAS counted around 4,300 chimney fires in the UK in 2018/19.

In England, since 1 October 2022, landlords must fit a carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fixed combustion appliance, such as a wood burner. Gas cookers are the exception.
